My name is Mary and I wanted to get to the bottom of a mystery that has been bugging me for quite some time now; I have often wondered what Holistic dog food actually is, and how it differs from commercial dog food? I own a Shih Tzu named Barry and recently at his annual vet check up his vet, Dr. Razdoff recommended that I start the little guy on some holistic dog food. I did not want to appear stupid, so said I would definitely look into it! Truth be known, I did not have the foggiest idea what holistic dog food was, so as soon as I got home, I fired up the PC and went into research mode.
The word ‘holistic’ oozes healthy, nutritional thoughts when I hear it, and upon research this does appear to be the case. Somebody on Ask.com actually posed the question: what is holistic pet food? The general response, summarized of course, was that holistic pet food is designed in a way that defies conventional manufacturing practises, focusing entirely on developing a healthy pet food, free of preservatives, etc. Webster’s defines holistic as relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts, whatever the hell that means!
I continued my quest and at the end of the day came to the realization that holistic pet food is essential for good dog health because it is made from all natural ingredients, is much healthier than commercial pet food, is more expensive than regular food, and can work to reduce or even eliminate certain health conditions that dogs are prone too, especially as they age. the DR told me that a healthier food would go a long way in reducing Barry’s itching, his weight, and may even help reduce his pain from arthritis, and that was all I needed to hear.
Not wanting to waste a second, I researched the various types of holistic dog food on the market and settled on Eagle Pack! Barry has been on his new food for a few days so it is to early to tell if it is helping him at all but I will keep an eye on him for sure and keep you updated.
